Duran Duran's "Planet Earth" is a classic single from their 1981 self-titled debut album. The song was released in March of that year and featured the core members of the band, Simon Le Bon (vocals), Nick Rhodes (keyboards), John Taylor (bass) and Roger Taylor (drums).
It was written by all four band members and produced by Colin Thurston. The song belongs to the genre of new wave and synthpop, with its catchy chorus and memorable lyrics. The music video for "Planet Earth" was the first ever aired on MTV UK and went on to become one of the most iconic videos of the decade. The single peaked at number 12 in the UK Singles Chart, making it their highest charting single until 1983’s “Is There Something I Should Know?”. Duran Duran have performed the song live numerous times over the years, including during their reunion tour in 2004. Its lyrics are still as relevant today as they were when they were first written: “We could be roving on the open sea/Living like we're meant to be/Free to be what we feel/It's our right to be real".
