Naked As We Came (Live) Lyrics
Iron & Wine
Lyrics
She says, "Wake up, it's no use pretending"
I'll keep stealing, breathing her
Birds are leaving over autumn's ending
One of us will die inside these arms
Eyes wide open
Naked as we came
One will spread our
Ashes 'round the yard
She says, "If I leave before you, darling
Don't you waste me in the ground"
I lay smiling like our sleeping children
One of us will die inside these arms
Eyes wide open
Naked as we came
One will spread our
Ashes 'round the yard
Song & Lyrics Facts
Iron & Wine's "Naked As We Came" is a live acoustic recording of the popular folk-rock track. The song was originally released on Iron & Wine's debut album, The Creek Drank the Cradle in 2002.
Written and performed by Sam Beam (aka Iron & Wine), the song features gentle strumming guitar and heartfelt lyrics about life coming full circle. It has since become one of Iron & Wine's most beloved songs. The live version of "Naked As We Came" was recorded for the 2009 release Around the Well. Along with other classic Iron & Wine tracks, it was reinterpreted as an intimate studio performance featuring just Beam's voice and guitar. With its beautiful melody and poetic lyrics, this live rendition brings out the emotion of the original even more powerfully. The lyrics reflect on life's journey from birth to death and how we are all ultimately naked before the world.
